This is a simple overview article about PCOS and how the health state of our gut can influence symptoms like weight gain.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is a condition in which a woman’s levels of the sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone are out of balance. Recently, few pieces of research have also connected this condition to blood sugar imbalance and insulin resistance.  What is not discussed enough is the co-relation between Gut health and PCOS.

The state of our microbiome and its composition are extremely important to modulate our hormones. More and more we can find research papers to support the important role played by the gut microbiome on our general health and wellbeing.  

When supporting a client with PCOS, I usually recommend a gut healing programme and low carb diet. The combination of these two-nutritional interventions helps the client to balance their hormones and consequently to lose weight.  

The gut healing programme amongst other benefits helps us to identify which foods suits us and which doesn’t. The programme also cleans the gut from bad bacteria, re-establish the integrity of the gut wall membrane and finally repopulate the gut with friendly bacteria. All this is achieved through an elimination diet, supplementation and re-education on how to eat and what to eat.

Probiotics (capsules with friendly bacteria) are used to repopulate the gut but once there, if we don’t feed them with the correct foods, their chance of surviving and proliferating is none. That is where the prebiotics arrives.

Prebiotics are a type of non-digestive fibre which feeds the friendly bacteria. The most common prebiotics are:

 Feeding our friendly bacteria is important because as they digest those fibres they produce some chemicals called short-chain fatty acids and these chemicals are used by our immune system to produce more immune cell and to tell or immune cells what to do. Our friendly bacteria are also responsible for the production of vitamin K and the metabolism of B vitamins, which is used on our energy production and hormone regulation, hence, contributing for the improvement of PCOS symptoms and weight-loss.  They are also involved in the production of some neurotransmitters amongst many other functions.  As you can see those guys are more than just friendly they are crucial partners for our survival, health and wellbeing.
